Botox Explained: What You Need to Know

What is Botox©, and how does it work?
Botox© Cosmetic is a prescription medicine that is injected into muscles and used to improve the look of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows for a short period of time (temporary). It works by blocking nerve impulses to the injected muscles. This reduces muscle activity, which causes persistent lines to form between the brows, forehead and around the eyes.

Why should I consider Botox© Cosmetic?
You may feel your frown lines between the brows make you look tired, unapproachable, or have other reasons. With real noticeable results, no surgery and no recovery time, there are many reasons to get treated with BOTOX© Cosmetic.

Is there anything I need to tell my doctor?
Your doctor should know about all your medical conditions, including if you have a disease that affects your muscles and nerves (such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Lou Gehrig’s disease (myasthenia gravis), or Lambert-Eaton syndrome). Tell your doctor about any and all prescription and nonprescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.

What causes frown lines?
The 11s—those vertical lines that appear between your brows—result from muscle contractions. When you concentrate, squint, or frown, the muscles between your brows contract, causing your skin to furrow and fold. After years of frequent contractions, those wrinkles can linger even after the muscles are at rest.

Will I still be able to make facial expressions?
Although the results are visible, a treatment with BOTOX© Cosmetic will not radically change your facial appearance or make you look as if you’ve “had work done.” The muscle activity that causes frown lines between the brows is temporarily reduced, so you can still frown or look surprised without the wrinkles and creases between your brows.

How quickly will I see a difference?
Within 24 to 48 hours, you may notice a softening in the appearance of your frown lines between your brows. The area may continue to improve for up to a month.

How long can I expect my results to last?
Visible results have been shown to last up to 4 months. Your own results may vary; be sure to talk to your healthcare provider about what you can expect and when to schedule your next appointment.

What are the injection-related side effects?
Side effects associated with the injection include localized pain, infection, inflammation, tenderness, swelling, redness, and/or bleeding or bruising.
